Steven Dalachinsky was born in Brooklyn, New York sometime after the last Big War and before lots of useless little wars...he has been writing poetry since before then and has always...he is basically self-taught...his great loves and influences are the Beats, Blake, Kafka, Camus, Harpo, surreal and abstract painting and music......especially jazz and so-called "Avant Guarde" or "FREE" jazz.

Né en 1946 dans le quartier de Brooklyn, à New York, Steve vit toujours à New York City. Co-organisateur du Festival Vision, toujours à New-York, c’est un poète de la scène downtown new-yorkaise, activement acteur de la scène free jazz et de la creative music. Poète jetant des mots dans la musique jazz (on parle de « spoken words »), parce qu’il se dit aspiré par l’inconnu, aimant tisser les rythmes pour qu’émerge une littérature, héritier des poèmes bop de Jack Kerouac. « Je veux être considéré comme un poète de jazz… », clamait celui-ci dans Mexico City Blues.

Né à Bordeaux en 1971,
Didier Lasserre débute l’instrument à l'âge de seize ans, pour tenter de vivre "autre chose." Travaille essentiellement en autodidacte afin de trouver sa propre voix; enseigne la batterie (Centre d’Improvisation Libre, Bordeaux, 2003); dirige des ateliers d'improvisation et des master-classes (AsproJazz / Jazz en Franche-Comté); et travaille avec la peinture, la poésie, la danse, le super8, la photographie. Outre ses projets actuels, il a joué aussi en concert avec entre autres Paul Rogers, Frédéric Blondy, Barre Phillips, Ernest Dawkins, Jean-François Pauvros, Kent Carter, Bertrand Denzler, Bertrand Gauguet, Assif Tsahar, Ronnie Lynn Patterson, Bobby Few, Steve Beresford, Urs Leimgruber, Phil Wachsmann, Roy Campbell et Benjamin Duboc.  Don't miss it!

Restons Cool : Le One Page Book de mamaNANA

mamaNANA, catalogue et boutique pour les jeunes mamams, était fondée avec une idée très simple: Aider femmes françaises allaitent de plus en plus, en leur proposant les vêtements, les coussins, et les accessoires qui existent déjà dans bien d’autres pays. Serendipity : Kim Powell At Mona Bismarck In Paris

When Kim Powell traveled to Sri Lanka in 2007 on a professional photo shoot, she never imagined she would begin her own artistic and philosophical journey. Her exhibition of photos at the Mona Bismarck Foundation which opens today in Paris touches upon the five senses, and offers the visitor a chance to absorb the visual and sensual richness of Sri Lanka.

Powell has captured the soul of a country and people who, historically, have faced many challenges from terrorism and civil war to natural disasters like the tsunami in December 2005. One would not expect the serenity in the faces, the peacefulness in the landscape. "Sri Lanka was not at all what I imagined," she says. 

The American photographer who has lived and worked in Paris for the past 15 years, studied photography at SPEOS, Parsons School of Design and the International School of Photography, New York. In France, her work has been exhibited at UNESCO, the Logis Royal in Loches and Paris Photographique. Kim Powell’s commercial photography includes the publication Bit by Fleas, a guide to the Paris flea markets.

Kim Powell has already been involved in other Mona Bismarck Foundation exhibitions photographing the Marianne North Gallery at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and providing the catalogue photography for Hubert de Givenchy’s Perfection Partagée: Mona Bismarck, Cristóbal Balenciaga. In 2008 Kim Powell was featured in My-Linh Kunst’s, Beyond Borders: Portraits of American Women from around the World.

The Mona Bismarck Foundation, created in the 1980s by the American philanthropist, the Countess Mona Bismarck, is an American foundation with a Paris Cultural Center located opposite the Eiffel Tower. The Foundation’s eclectic exhibition program, always free of charge, has mounted over 70 exhibitions in the past 20 years, many introducing emerging American artists to a European public.

Tito Honegger : Au Salon Artist Book Centre Pompidou Paris, Le 24 - 26 Octobre

Un ami de Lalande Digital Art Press Paris, Tito Honneger, artiste basé à Genève, Suisse présente son dernier livre "UN ENORME EXERCICE" au salon Artistbook international à Beaubourg/Edition Art & Fiction le 24, 25 et 26 et le signe le 25 de 14 à 15h.

Un artiste qui travail sur le paysage, objets trouvés, les impressions (monotypes) et les livres precieuses, Tito Honnegger a crée des très beau livres en éditions limitées, signées.  Haut qualité, impression numérique, des bijoux à sasir.

UN ENORME EXERCICE
Les monotypes que ce livre rassemble et reproduit ont été réalisés en 2005 et 2006 dans l’atelier de Tito Honegger à Genève. Leur objet est d’inclure à leur technique et à leurs motifs des poèmes (ou morceaux de poèmes) que Jacques Jouet a composés in situ, dans l’atelier, au vu et au su du travail pictural. Ce sont des œuvres de collaboration. Au fur et à mesure, l’une réagit aux poèmes et se les approprie, l’autre a le loisir de commenter en direct les images qui deviennent visibles et le relancent pour de nouveaux poèmes.

Monotype : Mode de dessin ou de peinture exécuté sur une plaque de verre ou de plexiglas enduite d’une couche d’encre d’imprimerie. Le transfert sur papier est une impression à tirage unique.

Ces monotypes ont été exposés à Genève (Villa Bernasconi, Grand-Lancy) en mars et avril 2008.  Edition Un Enorme Excercise128 pages; 178 x 255 mm: CHF 54 / € 37.

The Paris Years : Trish Nickell

Trish Nickell is leaving Paris with a retrospective exhibition of her gorgeous landscapes. More than a dozen oil on canvas views of France and Paris will be on exhibit through 25 October at Grace Teshima's gallery, in Montmarte. "The Paris Years" includes this gem, Pear Trees, Cordes-Sur-Ciel (above). Nickell, a Texas transplant who has lived nearly a dozen years in Paris, will be moving to the United States to continue painting and pointing her paintbrushes towards the Pacific from her new home in Portland, Oregon. We've long worked with Trish and her husband Dave (also a painter) in producing posters and postcards and have enjoyed the shared appreciation for what Paris and France offers artists. Linda McCluskey : Paris en Rêvant

"I'm a bit like a film director," says Linda McCluskey about her sometimes dizzying architecturally-inspired paintings.  Using a concave mirror-like perspective the viewer's eyes climb and descend the buildings she's painted on large canvases, oftentimes in diptychs and triptychs. Her aim is to seize the atmosphere that only someone who was actually standing in front of these street scenes could feel. "Seize the instant, the light, the movement, the warmth, the people a little bit blurry like our memories," she says. "Whether it's the rooftops of Paris or the music in a jazz café, my idea is to share my view – literally and figurative  – of the world, a protected world, warm and moving."

Linda McCluskey's Paris en Rêvant, will take place at Cosi, 54 Rue de Seine 75006 Paris. Opening: 15 October.

Cecil Touchon On Preserving Works on Paper

Artist Cecil Touchon gives a how-to for preserving works on paper and ensuring the longevity of artworks produced on all sorts of paper supports.

Preserving Works on Paper
I think the natural processes of what papers do should be accepted, even cherished and considered part of the process of the work. A little dignified fading is just fine in my book. As a collage artist I have a great love of very old papers. Many of the papers I have used over the years are as much as a couple of hundred years old. I am happy no one slathered some sort of preservative all over them. The pure wood pulp papers are something of a problem of course because they actually just turn to dust. If you look at early wood pulp papers from the 1880s and 90's, many of them you can hardly even touch any more. They are just crumbling. These types of papers definitely need the acrylic barrier. The internal acids are so strong that the paper is destroying itself regardless of preservation techniques short of putting the material in a deacidification liquid (which you can also use) However, I would like to stress that the look of many papers which will last a very long time - several hundred years - will be compromised by these techniques of layers of acrylic medium. So I would urge you not to use that technique indiscriminately. Additionally, consider the application. If possible thin your medium down quite a bit so as not to leave brush marks and unwanted texture on the papers. possibly even use a spray application. The papers that we use should be given the utmost respect and consideration as they are the very basis of what our work as collage artists is all about. The deterioration of the papers and inks is part of what we love about them.

Mounting Works
One thing that can be done - and is what I do without exception - is to mount your works on heavy watercolor paper (or museum board). I prefer 300 lb paper and leave several inches between the image and the outer border of the base sheet. This will help prevent waves or warping of the paper. I usually leave about a 4-5 inch 'dead space' so, an 8 x 10 inch collage is mounted on an 18 x 20 inch base sheet of 300 lb watercolor paper. This allows the image to be isolated from the environment by having a 5 inch barrier allowing the work to be seen without interference from the surroundings which can effect the perception of the work. It also, when handled, prevents anyone's hand from ever touching the image in the middle of the paper, it also leaves plenty of room for the base paper to absorb all the bumps and tears and stains that never make it to the image in the center.

The other problem with works on paper is the surface getting scratched, rubbed or stuck to other surfaces from having other works stacked on top or stick to it. Therefore it is good to have some plastic bags to keep works in individually so they don't hurt each other. This kind of thing probably creates more damage in the artist's studio than natural deterioration.

Framing and Storage
Then there are two other aspects of preservation. Framing and Storage. If you use a UV sheet of glass or Plexiglas that will take care of the ultraviolet issue as well as the exposure to air or touch issue. Enemies that proper storage and framing will help with are: light, atmosphere, dust, moisture and insects (some of whom have a great love of paper too!) One of the biggest enemies of paper is direct sunlight. Keeping works out of the sun is one of the best things you can do for your art papers so invest in containers and drawer units that will store your papers and finished works in the dark. Also, keeping works in a dry, cool place helps a great deal too. Proper atmospheric conditions go a long way to ensure the longevity of your papers. Be sure also to keep the area where your papers are stored free of any kind of insects or vermin such as mice or rats. Many artists have lost vast amounts of work from putting their art in deep storage only to return years later to find that mice decided to set up house in the flat files. Imagine the horror of finding your life's work in this condition. Even framed work can suffer from moisture, mildew and insects so if you keep works framed be sure to inspect them carefully at least every six months. Works hanging on walls should be taken down now and again for cleaning and to check the backs of frames for any of these problems.

Remember, paper has always been intended as an ephemeral product and for indoor use only. Paper by its very nature is not something designed last for eternity and indeed, that is one of the things we love about it. But still with proper care most papers will last indefinitely into the future.

And if we happen to get our works into well-funded art museum collections and the works go up and up in value, we'll have a whole staff of people looking after the work long after we are gone. On the other hand, if our work is not destined for this kind of glorification, no matter what you do, it will suffer the fate of negligence and probable destruction. Some experts say, 90% of all art created will be destroyed within a generation. Here, the artist needs to intercede. 

Adhesives : A Sticky Issue
After all of this preservation the other possible problem is the adhesive used. I personally use acrylic gel medium but you can use wheat paste, rice paste, wallpaper paste, billboard paste, Elmer's Glue, etc. But what you have to avoid are glue sticks and spray adhesives and rubber cement. These things yellow badly or loose their adhesive quality. After a number of years, the papers will become unattached. However, they are good for creating temporary paste-ups which are collages that you make strictly for the purpose of creating reproductions from them either by photographing them or scanning them so that the final work is not the collage or photo montage paste-up but the photographic image of it. In which case you would destroy the paste-up when finished with it and you would not care if it falls apart or yellows over time.

Photos de seins : un crime, en France ?

Pour avoir osé envoyer quatre cartes postales représentant des seins nus, l'artiste de mail-art Philippe Pissier est aujourd'hui passible de trois ans d'emprisonnement. Il est accusé de trouble à l'ordre public.

Le mail-art est une forme d'art qui consiste à envoyer des oeuvres d'art par la Poste. En juin 2008, l'artiste Philippe Pissier est invité à participer à une exposition de mail-art érotique en Allemagne. Il envoie donc, dûment timbrées, quatre cartes postales représentant - attention, attention - le buste d'une jolie femme. Détail fatal : elle porte sur chaque sein non pas des piercings mais des pinces à linge... Saisi d'une vertueuse indignation, le centre de tri postal porte immédiatement plainte.

Estimant, sans doute elle aussi, que des images de poitrine féminine sont pornographiques, Isabelle Ardeef, substitut du procureur de la République de Cahors, ordonne une enquête préliminaire. Convoqué à la gendarmerie, Philippe Pissier apprend qu'il est passible de trois ans d'emprisonnement et de 175.000 euros d'amende, en vertu de l'article 227-24 du code pénal. Motif : trouble à l'ordre public et mise en danger du psychisme des enfants par une oeuvre pornographique.

Philippe Pissier proteste: "Je suis majeur, les employés du centre de tri postal sont majeurs, le facteur est majeur et le destinataire est majeur. Je ne vois pas où est le problème." Le voilà pourtant perquisitionné à son domicile. Le 3 juillet, la brigade de recherche de Cahors emporte son ordinateur et quelques dizaines de ses oeuvres. Depuis... rien. Philippe Pissier, privé de son outil de travail, attend de savoir ce que la justice française lui réserve.

Le 11 septembre, un journal local - L'Echo - titre ironiquement : "Un dangereux artiste démasqué dans le Lot": "Si une telle image mobilise à ce point les forces de l'ordre, à quoi doivent s'attendre les maisons de la presse, kiosques à journaux, galeries de peinture et musées, où la nudité dépasse souvent abondamment la mise en image d'une paire de seins, même ornée de pinces à linge." Le journaliste rappelle avec justesse qu'à une certaine époque les papes faisaient mettre des slips aux statues et aux anges des fresques.

Dans la Dépêche du Midi, un confrère, Florian Moutafian, s'interroge avec angoisse : "Va-t-on fermer les musées, les maisons de la presse et arrêter les pubs pour le gel douche (avec poitrines apparentes bien plus accessibles aux mineurs)?". Maître Baduel, l'avocat de Philippe Pissier, trouve la plaisanterie moins drôle : "Il faut se demander si la shariah est applicable à Cahors, dit-il. Je peux comprendre qu'à Dubai on conseille aux touristes d'éviter le monokini, mais en France? Sommes-nous donc maintenant en terre d'islam?"

Au tribunal de Cahors, ni le président ni le procureur de la République ne semblent au courant de l'affaire. Le substitut, Isabelle Ardeef, refuse de communiquer. Officiellement, "l'enquête suit son cours." Une enquête qui, probablement, amènera les autorités à interdire non seulement les cartes postales grivoises (en vente partout sur notre territoire) mais l'allaitement au sein (une forme sournoise et rampante de pédophilie, à coup sûr). Les mères ne sont-elles pas coupables de montrer leurs seins nus à de si jeunes âmes? Scandale épouvantable, elles se font même titiller les tétons par leur propre progéniture, dans le but - soyons-en certains - de se procurer d'inavouables sensations.

Si vous aussi vous voulez participer de cette grande oeuvre de restauration morale, je vous suggère d'encourager les autorités à combattre les seins nus. Envoyez vos encouragements au TGI de Cahors sous la forme d'une carte postale. Une suggestion au hasard : envoyez la reproduction de ce chef d'oeuvre de l'école de Fontainebleau - Gabrielle d'Estrées - montrant la belle Gaby se faire pincer un téton par sa soeur. Ce tableau est en libre accès au Louvre où tous les enfants peuvent le voir. La Poste portera-t-elle plainte contre vous? Les gendarmes viendront-ils perquisitionner à votre domicile? L'enquête prendra-t-elle un an? ou deux? Récupérerez-vous votre ordinateur en état de marche après avoir purgé votre peine? Cela peut sembler ahurissant - de la science fiction - et pourtant... Cela se passe en France en ce moment.

The 7th Annual Dormouse Conference Paris!

We wager you've never really considered where the Woodland Dormouse sleeps.  Yes, the Graphiurus Murinus, does like his/her nestbox as illustrated here in this 100 x 70 cm poster we printed for Emmanuel Dolinhsan for the 7th Annual Conference on the... you guessed it, the incredibly adorable and extremely industrious Dormouse.  The job, a rush rush production for a presentation at the Paris Conference was delivered at the client's hotel in Paris.  How did Emmanuel find us?  He Googled: English-language Printer in Paris.

A nice note from Emmanuel followed delivery: "Dear Robert and Matthew... Thanks a lot! We received the poster and are very satisfied. The service you provide is so convenient ! Keep up the good work. For once it feels good to be a client !

Sparkasse : New Print For Keep Calm Gallery

Sparkasse, a new print by Matthew Rose from LALANDE DIGITAL ART PRESS PARIS for Keep Calm Gallery, (UK), is now available. The print, in an edition of 50, signed and numbered by the artist, measures 38 x 27 cm, with a border of 4 cm on 300 gram acid-free archival paper. Printed on the Epson 9600 by master printer Robert Ruscoe, Sparkasse is the seventh print the artist has produced for Keep Calm, three of which have sold out.

Sparkasse, "savings bank" in German, was originally exhibited at Galerie Rossella Junck in Berlin. The piece is part of the suite from the exhibition entitled A KICK IN THE KUNST. The artist's next exhibition is THE END OF THE WORLD, the inaugural exhibition at Wm Turner Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia, opening 18 September.

Ricardo Bloch: Huckleberry Dick

Huckleberry Dick began as a collage work by Ricardo Bloch in 1995, and has now been published as a facsimile of the original, in a limited-edition of 250 copies, printed by Lalande Digital Art Press.

Copies are available directly from the author for only 15€ plus shipping.

Using the classic glue and scissors technique, during an obsessive spell in a cabin by Lake Superior in the summer of 1995, Ricardo blended Classics Illustrated adaptations of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Moby Dick. Starting with page one, and using two copies of each comic book, Ricardo advanced page by page until the climactic page 48. Images and/or fragments of text were cut and pasted to create a seemingly seamless hybrid story. The task was facilitated, or in fact made possible, because both Huckleberry Finn and Moby Dick are first person narratives that recount tales of personal discovery, of boats and water, and of a friendship with a man of color.

It may not completely surprise those that have read the books, that the coupling of the two stories has brought to light the subliminal homoerotic themes underlying their narratives.

COLLAGE BY BLACK DOG PUBLISHING

Collage has been at the forefront of the digital revolution, if not for the final results, then for the method, a way of mixing images and texts via computer manipulation. Like music sampling (hip hop and rap), multiple sources can be "glued" together to create something extremely new and strange. The dadaists seized on the methods employed by Picasso and Braque, and the surrealists made a living out of collage to great and what appears to be everlasting effect. It can be argued that collage is perhaps the preeminent art method of the 20th and 21st centuries. Modern masters like Joseph Cornell and Ray Johnson created some of the most memorable collages, with the later extending his signature methods into pretty much all aspects of his life and art.

On Appropriation

Peter Friedman, a law professor at Case Western, in Ohio, writes a fascinating piece about appropriation, a subject digital artists, collage artists, film makers, musicians and most creatives are involved with. His piece on his legal blog, What Is Fair Use, touches on, among other issues, an "appropriation" of John Cage's 4:33, silent concert as well as the law suit that came from it.

Friedman writes: This attitude [about Fair Use] has led to some remarkable lawsuits. Mike Batt is a British classical composer who put together a group called "The Planets" in 2001. Their first album was called Classical Graffiti. In it Batt included a track with one full minute of silence. He said it was a tongue-in-cheek dig at a John Cage piece called 4 minutes 33 seconds which was similarly a track of total silence, albeit somewhat longer. Batt, credited himself as well as Cage with writing the piece. There would be precious few other ways to identify who the dig was directed at. Unfortunately, Batt soon found himself on the receiving end of a lawsuit from the estate of John Cage, who had died several years previous. In the trustees' view "We do feel that the concept of a silent piece - particularly as it was credited by Mr Batt as being co-written by 'Cage' - is a valuable artistic concept in which there is a copyright."

James Startt : Guilty Pleasures

"Je parle donc je suis," exposition de photographe James Startt, et livre publié par l'artiste et notre affilié, Polyflash/Paris, fait connaissance de la puissance de message et mode. Le photographe, connu pour ses livres sur Le Tour de France et son dernier "Uniforms," explique sa demarche et l'historique de l'expo chez Agathe Gaillard:

Après plus de huit ans et demi, je me suis trouvé dans une impasse (comme le film d’un certain réalisateur italien). Après être resté tout ce temps focalisé sur un premier travail documentaire «Uniforme(s)» (les Editions du Seuil 2002 et l’expo photo de même année pendant le mois de la photo chez Agathe Gaillard) sans penser au lendemain, je me suis trouvé au bord d'un vide créatif effrayant, mais à la juste mesure, après tout, des efforts laissés derrière moi.

Que faire? Je n'en savais absolument rien, il ne me restait qu'un mot en perspective: recommencer. Regarder, viser (ou pas), déclencher, libre et sans but, en quelque sorte. Sans planning et sans cahier des charges. Plus encore: sans thème directeur.

Je photographiais alors tout ce que j'aimais de façon pulsionnelle et sans discrimination d'aucune sorte. Le matériel lui-même était, sinon indifférent, du moins improvisé - je prenais ce qui me tombait alors sous la main au gré des circonstances. Je dois dire que j'ai longtemps poursuivi la pureté des grands formats (spécialement du 6x6): j'ai donc mis un certain temps à accepter que ces formats n'était pas conciliables avec ma façon impromptue et flashée d’attaquer la photographie.

Pendant des mois j'ai expérimenté le montage d'un flash sur mon vieux Mamiya, avant de voir pousser les fruits de ce travail. C'était au soir d'un week-end londonien, où j'avais vu une fille "néo-gothique" superbement affublée d'un tee-shirt "Save the planet, Kill Yourself", que le déclic m'est venu. Visionnant le résultat de mes planches, j'était sur que j'avais trouvé mon prochain sujet.

J'avais beaucoup usé du format rectangulaire, en cherchant toujours à remplir le cadre, quitte à incliner le boîtier. Le format carré me semblait alors restrictif.

Ce projet m'a réconcilié avec le déconcertant équilibre du format carré, le plus apte à centrer l'attention sur les messages arborés par les porteurs de tee-shirts, à concentrer mon regard sur les leurs, sur leur messages ironiques, tour à tour hédoniste ou absent, mais toujours plein de sens, d'humeur au sens le plus physique et donc le plus littéral du terme.

Sur l'exposition, critique d'art, Christophe Donner, a écrit:

Lorsque James Startt le rencontre, son sujet a fait la moitié du chemin qui mène à la photo. Il a jailli de la masse, il s’en est détaché pour se présenter à celui qui le guettait, mais avant ça, depuis ce matin il est là dans sa tête à se demander ce qu’il va mettre, ce qu’il va dire. La journée du manifestant sera perdue s’il ne rencontre pas le regard de l’autorité, celle qui a fait l’autre moitié du chemin vers l’instant photographique. Ce désir d’être pris, de s’offrir, là, dans la rue, il est cousin de l’excitation de dire, plus que de la nécessité. Dire est une affaire sensuelle, tactile, la parole n’est plus rien sans le support, le tissu a influencé la revendication qui ne tiendrait pas sur une pancarte et qui ne sera jamais crié, et surtout : jamais reprise par quelqu’un d’autre. En donnant à la phrase la possibilité de mouler d’énormes nichons, de dévoiler grossesses et grosseurs, le coton s’impose comme une stèle littéraire d’un genre nouveau.
Fashion writing, mais pas que ça. Body art, mais au soleil, car James Startt en appelle toujours à cette forme particulière de lumière qui vient frapper le sujet et l’objectif, un peu, plus ou moins selon la violence qu’il retient de l’instant. C’est toujours le reflet du soleil qui unit le photographe à ses modèles, il joue de son inopportunité comme avec un feu qui pourrait tout brûler. Il prend le risque et donne à voir ce risque comme l’essence du mouvement. Chez les cyclistes, ce qu’il attrape, c’est l’éclat solaire de la souffrance, et là, dans ce débraillé social, le long de la paresse urbaine des marcheurs endimanchés, c’est aussi l’éclat d’intelligence au milieu du désastre en liesse. Quand on pense aux modèles de William Klein, en voyant ceux de Startt, on est frappé par l’inconscience des premiers, et la sapience des autres : l’écriture a tout changé. Les premiers criaient, ceux-ci sont muets, comme si, entre temps, on avait abandonné au tissu, à la matière, à la manufacture et à l’actualité, abandonné l’oralité de nos plaintes. Reste cependant, chez nos anciens comme chez nous, le même bonheur d’être reconnu dans la foule.

Mittwoch, Haushalten & Whirlaway - 3 New Prints By Matthew Rose For Keep Calm Gallery

Lalande Digital Press is happy to be working with Keep Calm Gallery, the hip-online gallery for fine art prints in the UK. The newest works from Matthew Rose are from his A KICK IN THE KUNST series, exhibited at Galerie Rossella Junck Berlin.

Mittwoch, 2007, is German for "Wednesday," (literally middle of the week) and artist Matthew Rose's puppet-master/puppet collage. First exhibited in Berlin at Galerie Rossella Junck, Mittwoch (Limited signed and numbered edition of 21) plays with both silhouette and shadow, each exhibiting a presence but Mittwoch is oddly absent an actual protagonist. The artist says this is something of a self-portrait, and he is somewhere in the gap of here and there.

Haushalten is German for "keeping house," and in this piece, the house is not what it seems to be: constructed of 1950s advertising, the woman of the house shows off her newest gadget, a giant thingamajig, or if you like, a...dohickey, gizmo, gismo, or a thingamabob – on an ancient Roman pedestal. The surreal qualities of this good housekeeping moment – the blue sky blows through the gadget – points to terribly sunny days ahead from America's recent past. Haushalten, was produced in an edition of 19, is signed and number; it is also part of the A Kick in the Kunst series exhibited in Berlin at Galerie Rossella Junck.

Whirlaway, 2007, is one of the more complex of Matthew Rose's collage works from the A Kick in the Kunst series. The name, a feature from a mid-century Oldsmobile, purports a strange and perhaps violent future as a man hacks away at a tree. In the panel opposite, a girl and her shadow climb in a nether-space, a plate of prunes and cereal functioning as her head. The artist, who grew up in the American suburbs, reiterates the hidden and bizarre drama of the American middle-class dream. Whirlaway is produced in a limited edition of 12, each signed and numbered on high quality cotton paper.

Carole: By Danielle Voirin




In October a calf was born on a farm in Normandy. The French family named her Carole. Danielle Voirin, the ex-pat Paris-based photographer was visiting her friends on the farm and she began photographing Carole. She learned the calf was specially bred for veal. "I met her on day two of her life, knowing she was destined to be meat," says Danielle. Carole was tethered to a rope in a small room her entire life. She drank only milk. And from her place in the small barn she could only see one view – another little barn, some bales of hay, the sliver of sky, a tree. She would be slaughtered in the spring for meat for the family.

Danielle returned many times to the farm to see her friends and to photograph Carole. "My intention was to be her witness, follow the transformation, link a life and a face to what I see on a plate, and eliminate the disconnect," she says. Then, this past March, Carole, having reached the optimum size, she was scheduled to be killed. Danielle, who had since bonded with the calf through half a dozen photo sessions, asked the abattoir if she could be there to document Carole's death. "At first they said yes, but the morning I showed up – at 5:30 am – they turned me away, telling me it was impossible." Danielle stood her ground but the bouchers closed the door and only allowed her in once Carole had been butchered and placed in boxes.

"Carole" is Danielle's one-page-book homage to the calf. Designed in an A3-format for Danielle as she makes her way to Rencontres Arles Photographie, in Arles, France (8 juillet - 14 septembre). Lalande Digital Press's unique one-page-book format provided an excellent way to tell Carole's story in a mini-catalog. CAROLINE SECQ : ASSEMBLAGE SUR LA PLAGE

CAROLINE SECQ passe beaucoup de temps sur le bord de la mer, pour voir très loin à l’horizon et, evidement très près, à ses pieds ! C'est là où elle cultive son art, un art de l’assemblage et de l’art-cumulation, comme la petite sculpture à gauche, "Kucina.”

"Je joue de toutes les matières, mais uniquement celles que me fournit l’océan," explique-t-elle. "Bouts de bois, plastique, ficelle, choses, rêve, trucs bidules et machins… machouillés, triturés, déglutis par les flôts. J’amasse et ramasse des bouts, débris, brisures, fracas et carcasses, et j’utilise tout tel que." Mais dans l'atelier Caroline Secq transforme tout: "L’œil et la main butinent et voltigent sans préméditation. J’emboite, construis, superpose, juxtapose, compose…."

Ses constructions sont d’un autre monde, bien sûr, mais nous rappelent celui où l’on vit. Lalande Digital Art Press Paris avait le grand plaisir de travailler avec Caroline Secq pour son exposition à Saint Cado (12 juillet - 28 juillet). Nous avons eu la chance d'imprimer ses cartes d'exposition pour Saint Cado. Anonymous Drawings


Blütenweiss is an association headed by the wonderful Berlin artist, Anke Becker. Several times a year, Anke puts on one of the most popular and interesting exhibitions to be held anywhere in Europe, Anonyme Zeichner, or Anonymous Drawings. The concept is simple: Artists send in drawings that are roughly A3-sized, unsigned (except on the back) and then offered for sale for 150 euros. The Anonymous Drawings exhibitions have been wildly successful with nearly 1000 entries and thousands of visitors and sales.

The next Anonyme Zeichner exhibition takes place this weekend, 4 July - 6 July at Galerie in der Stadtscheune, Sackstrasse 4, 21762 Otterndorf in Germany. Opening: July 4th, 2008 / 7pm. Hours: Saturday & Sunday, 11am - 8pm. The works are from the archive and selected by Anke.
