Rubens Rounding Third

Matthew Rose takes a swing at the art of baseball in his prize-winning art stamp sheet, Rubens Rounding Third. Printed on gummed paper and perforated, the stamp sheet is the artist's ode to baseball, art, Rubens, stamps in a sexy twist on turning the corner, in this case third base.

This collector's piece is headed for Cooperstown, the Baseball Hall of Fame in Upstate New York, as well as a permanent place at the Philatelic Museum of Oaxaca (MUFI), which awarded the artist first prize in their world wide competition for 'Baseball Philately + The Art Inspired by Philately'.

"My guess is that Americans of all sizes will be interested in this work, not only those who love baseball and art," said Matthew, "but also those who grew up playing the game and found themselves distracted by some attractive fan in the crowd."
  • Printed on gummed stamp sheets
  • Signed and numbered by the artist
  • Limited edition of 1000
  • 296mm by 407mm (11½ by 16 inches)

The End of the World: New Print For Keep Calm

THE END OF THE WORLD (REALLY BUILT TO LAST) is Paris-based artist Matthew Rose's latest surreal fantasy about the fragility of world we live in and the end of the world we've built.

Based on an original collage from 2008, THE END OF THE WORLD, reports from the frontiers of the real and dream worlds, where foods and animals, naughty little boys and errant little girls enter into the visual field and run, jump, hang and float in and around an assortment of human narratives that are veering dangerously out of control. Like in life.
This work, and others in the series, will appear in Masters of Collage (Lark Publishing, USA) in May 2010 along with 40 other contemporary artists.
This full color print measures 25 x 25 cm, and also has a border for framing.  Signed and numbered in an edition of 85, the print, produced by Lalande Digital Art Press Paris costs 38 UK Pounds exclusively from Keep Calm Gallery.  Click here to go to Keep Calm Gallery to see detailed images and order.

COLLAGE BY BLACK DOG PUBLISHING

Collage has been at the forefront of the digital revolution, if not for the final results, then for the method, a way of mixing images and texts via computer manipulation. Like music sampling (hip hop and rap), multiple sources can be "glued" together to create something extremely new and strange. The dadaists seized on the methods employed by Picasso and Braque, and the surrealists made a living out of collage to great and what appears to be everlasting effect. It can be argued that collage is perhaps the preeminent art method of the 20th and 21st centuries. Modern masters like Joseph Cornell and Ray Johnson created some of the most memorable collages, with the later extending his signature methods into pretty much all aspects of his life and art.

Just out is the new fat volume on the subject by Black Dog Publishing / UK : Collage Assembling Contemporary Art. With known experts Sally O’Reilly, Ian Monroe, David Lillington and John Stezaker among the contributors, the hardcover 240 page color book retails for £35.00.

According to Black Dog Publishing: "Collage: Assembling Contemporary Art is a striking and authoritative survey of the history of collage, from its origins through to the work being produced by artists today. (Image, THE PEOPLE, Matthew Rose, right).

With contemporary artists reclaiming the form, collage is flourishing. From the traditional ‘cut and paste’ method through to digital, three dimensional and installation work, and in the incorporation of contemporary concerns such as environment and commercialism, collage is experiencing an exciting renaissance.

First gaining popularity in the early 1900s, with such pieces as Picasso’s The Dream in 1908 and Still Life with Chair Caning in 1912, collage has proliferated though the ages. From figures such as Kurt Schwitters, to works by the Constructivists, Dadaists, and Surrealists, to 1960s and 70s Pop Art, the form has branched out into a myriad of fine art practice that encompasses assemblage, montage, and décolage. Collage draws together the work of influential artists to contextualize the art being produced today.

Collage features the art of such internationally acclaimed artists as Picasso, Schwitters and Ernst, Hannah Hoch, Marta Rosler, John Stezaker, Richard Hamilton, Layla Curtis, David Salle, Eduardo Poalozzi, Javier Rodriguez, Robert Rauschenberg, David Thorpe, Fred Tomaselli, Matthew Rose and many more.

Mittwoch, Haushalten & Whirlaway - 3 New Prints By Matthew Rose For Keep Calm Gallery

Lalande Digital Press is happy to be working with Keep Calm Gallery, the hip-online gallery for fine art prints in the UK. The newest works from Matthew Rose are from his A KICK IN THE KUNST series, exhibited at Galerie Rossella Junck Berlin.

Mittwoch, 2007, is German for "Wednesday," (literally middle of the week) and artist Matthew Rose's puppet-master/puppet collage. First exhibited in Berlin at Galerie Rossella Junck, Mittwoch (Limited signed and numbered edition of 21) plays with both silhouette and shadow, each exhibiting a presence but Mittwoch is oddly absent an actual protagonist. The artist says this is something of a self-portrait, and he is somewhere in the gap of here and there.

Haushalten is German for "keeping house," and in this piece, the house is not what it seems to be: constructed of 1950s advertising, the woman of the house shows off her newest gadget, a giant thingamajig, or if you like, a...dohickey, gizmo, gismo, or a thingamabob – on an ancient Roman pedestal. The surreal qualities of this good housekeeping moment – the blue sky blows through the gadget – points to terribly sunny days ahead from America's recent past. Haushalten, was produced in an edition of 19, is signed and number; it is also part of the A Kick in the Kunst series exhibited in Berlin at Galerie Rossella Junck.

Whirlaway, 2007, is one of the more complex of Matthew Rose's collage works from the A Kick in the Kunst series. The name, a feature from a mid-century Oldsmobile, purports a strange and perhaps violent future as a man hacks away at a tree. In the panel opposite, a girl and her shadow climb in a nether-space, a plate of prunes and cereal functioning as her head. The artist, who grew up in the American suburbs, reiterates the hidden and bizarre drama of the American middle-class dream. Whirlaway is produced in a limited edition of 12, each signed and numbered on high quality cotton paper.

Wahsoh: New Print For Keep Calm UK

Keep Calm and Carry On: A new print, Wahsoh (2008) by Matthew Rose for KEEP CALM GALLERY is now available exclusively through the web site.

The edition is signed, dated and numbered, edition of 50, A2-sized (18" x 25") full-color print on fine acid-free paper, printed by Lalande Digital Art Press Paris. Price: 55 UK Pounds. This print is typical of Matthew Rose's increasingly mad world. Originally a 50 x 50 cm collage exhibited in "Herzschmerz" in 2006 Berlin at Gallery Tristesse Deluxe, the piece was destroyed (and has subsequently been remade). Here, obsessive worlds of sex and language collide in a miasma of metaphor and mistaken identity. The artist takes his collage technique to not only reading and spelling, but seeing and hearing, with this unique "all-over" piece.

Click on the image above to enlarge Wahsoh.

Two exhibitions by Matthew Rose are planned for May and June. In May, The David Turner Gallery, in Atlanta, Georgia will present more than 30 large-format prints from the A Perfect Friend series as well as a series of drawings and collages for the gallery's inaugural exhibition. In June, Galerie Rosella Junck, Augustrasse 28, Berlin will feature new collage works, drawings and objects in a show entitled "A KICK IN THE KUNST."

Mister Rose's ABC : A Little Book For Little People

Learning your ABCs will never be the same, according to Mr. Rose. Mister Rose's ABC : A Little Book For Little People (10 €) has just been published by Lalande Digital Art Press Paris.

No time to read through this post? OK: GIMME MY COPY NOW OF MISTER ROSE'S ABC, or heck, several copies, E-MAIL : MISTER ROSE'S ABC.

The 32-page, full-color book features original gouache paintings and poetic tongue-twisters that follow the alphabet from Arnold the annoying Airplane to (tough and dumb) Luck to Nero the Nail (he lives in a wall in Mister Rose's house) to the yackety Ying-Yangs and finally, Zoe the zaftig Zebra. [CLICK IMAGES TO ENLARGE AND READ].  SEE THE VIDEO!

Saddle-stitched and impeccably printed by digital master, Robert Ruscoe at Lalande, Mister Rose's ABC is really a book for kids of all ages, a perfect cadeau de Noël, New Year's, birthday or everyday gift for children or friends. Read the press from Moira McLaughlin's lovely Dog Art Today.

"Parents will have an enjoyable time reading this to their toddlers and trying to figure out why Ditzy, the deaf-as-a-door knob dog, is always digging and dancing," says Ruscoe who has two little boys. "My favorite is Nero the Nail, or maybe Romney's Rain – "Hey! Don't Complain!"

The play of words and images is typical of the artist's imagination, which is pleasantly skewed towards the impossible and the poetic. "W" is Wally Water, he writes. "Wally is originally from Wabash." Nero the nail "lives in my house," he explains. Karl, his kitten, "computes with a flute." Parents will have quite a time explaining where Wabash is and how you compute with musical instruments.

"It's the kind of kid's book," says the author's father, Irving, "that will probably drive parents crazy attempting to explain the strange words and weird and funny situations. And hey, I know! He's my son!"

[Stephane Guyader (below) who runs the baba cool bookstore, Apsara, on 44 rue Daguerre (75014), has a few copies for retail sale.]
