Rubber Madness : Les Potes

Robert Ruscoe, my partner and technical digital wizard at Lalande Digital Art Press Paris, is also a talented rubber stamp artist. He's created more than 1000 rubber stamps, each with its own genius. He works tirelessly late at night carving details out of a few square centimeters of rubber, adding to a canon of artworks that range from portraits of artists like Joseph Beuys and Serge Gainsbourg, remakes of photos by Eadweard Muybridge (a flipbook), postage stamps, and word and text works that are not only clever, but beautiful.

Here he is stamping away at the 2003 Mail Art exhibition in Paris organized by Christian Balmier. That show included a number of artists including Michel Hosszù, Fernand Barbot, Ryosuke Cohen, Laurent Rousseau and for the closing, became the embassy launchpas for Liz Stirling's Liz Vegas. Needless to say, Liz (who works at Internet design company, Spill, created an event that was a scream – in pink.

This piece (right), is the newest in our Carte de Rencontre promotion series, and features Robert's brilliant "LES POTES" rubberstamp. Two gay men with the tagline "RUBBER SAVES LIVES" promotes safe sex. It's our Ca-Potes (capote = "condom" in French, and "potes" = friends: a play on LA POSTE) card. Targeting the male gay market in Paris with a rubber (stamp) is one way to encourage responsible communications. If you're in Paris, look for them next weekend in the gay bars in the Marais, along the rue des Archives (75004 and 75003).

The Fairer Sex : A Private View

What do six women do on a Friday night in Paris? Compare notes? Yes! And photos. Projected on an atelier wall, images by six women photographers will be viewed by a private, invitation-only group in a show entitled "The Fairer Sex" this Friday, 28 September. Organized and hosted by Danielle Voirin, (she took my profile photo), the idea came to her when someone recently asked her if she knew many women photographers in Paris. "No," she said, much to her own surprise. Then a friend from Planet Waves, out of the blue, offered her a slide projector destined for storage and the concept of a small, intimate show took shape. Through word of mouth and loose associations, she selected the five other photographers from France, the U.S., Italy and Finland: Vilma Pimenoff, Anne-Sophie Jal, Aurelie Prissette, Elena Rossini, and Sue Rynski.

While sex is the subject, it is not always the object with these photographers. The feminine eye these women cast on the world about them, opens up not only on fashion details (rings, nails, shoes), but architectural details as well (concrete edges, bricks, rain on cobblestones) and the female body in corporeal and incorporeal form. Vietnam: Dominic Khoo - Serie Velos

Notre Carte de Rencontre (No. 5) voyage à “Vietnam” avec Dominic Khoo. Ses photos, prises en plein ville, captent une vie joyeuse. Et bien sûr en velo. Dominic is one of the world most celebrated watch collectors. Based in Singapore (and often Europe), Khoo has become one of the most sought-after image-makers in Europe and Asia. His work has appeared in hundreds of magazines on subjects from fashion and architecture to luxury, celebrity portraits and what he calls "Pure" – raw photos of emotion bound for a sleek coffee table book.

Galerie XXI: Dans La Four

Dorothée Loriquet, ceramaciste et sculpteur est une de la famille d'artistes autour de la Galerie XXI, endroit exceptionelle à Paris où se trouve la ceramique du 20ème et 21ème siecle. Loriquet expose le 18 Septembre à la galerie, 268 Boulevard Raspail, 75014, en face de La Fondation Cartier.

La galerie, charmante et toujours interessante, expose l'univers unique de la ceramique, y compris artistes comme Odile Frachet, Albert Thiry, Jean-Michel Doix, Valérie Lebrun et Thierry Finidori parmi d'autre noms connus. Un Pupitre Dans Le Jardin d'Eden

C'est quoi un pupitre? A quoi ça sert? Crier? Discuter? Expliquer? Bavarder? Même regarder? Insufler de l'ésprit avec la parole? C'est le projet – les questions autour d'un bloc de bois (ou marble) d'artiste Eden Morfaux d'en trouver. Son investigation se lance le 22 Septembre chez Le Cube Rouge, boutique sympa quartier Rue Daguerre, 14ème – un magasin de meubles des années 50s/60s. Pensez Charles Eames, Arne Jacobson, Jean Prouvé. Et maintenant, des pupitres en bois d'Eden Morfaux.

"Le pupitre est pour moi un meuble/outil," explique Eden (à gauche). "Il légitime la parole et la prise de parole. Il soutient l’homme, le met sur un piédestal. Quand on est au pupitre, c’est notre moment, notre tour de parler, de nous exprimer. Mon idée est de mettre à disposition des citoyens mes pupitres ; les mettre au niveau de la rue, les rendre accessibles. Le pupitre représente pour moi l’individu et ses idées. Je veux créer l’image d’un espace public intégrant la prise de parole libre, créer des espaces où les échanges d’idées sont possible, autorisés."

"Quand Eden m'a exposé son projet j'ai trouvé ça tellement intéressant et généreux, que je lui ai proposé ma galerie," explique Jérôme Godin, Le Cube Rouge (en bas, à droit). "Chance pour moi, il a été emballé."

Le projet Pupitres se compose de deux temps : l’exposition au Cube Rouge présentera huit pupitres, chaque jour un différent et ce pendant huit jours; ensuite les pupitres seront déposés dans des espaces publics du 14ème arrondissement de Paris pour une durée indéterminée.

Eden, qui travaille pour beaucoup de galeriestes à Paris en faisant des montages d'expositions. Alors, Eden connait très bien l'espace public, les oeuvres d'art et comment les gens les regardent. Ceci est son premier grand projet. Lalande a contribué à ce projet intriguant en imprimant les grandes affiches et les cartons d'invitation.

"Le projet d'Eden Morfaux est intéressant sur différents points, je ne parlerais là que du coté humain: mettre à disposition des gens de la rue un meuble/oeuvre d'art pour leur permettre de s'exprimer est quelque chose de très beau et très rare. Il me tarde le 22 septembre!"

Le travail d'Eden se trouve dans le pantheon d'artistes des années 60s et 70s comme Richard Artschwager en jouant avec le rôle d'une chaise, d'un table et des objets quotidien (il a fait aussi des meubles pour Vitra). Voilà des sculptures comme objet sans fonction, qui fonctionne quand même. Eden propose aussi ses pupitres dans la rue, comme une boîte qui nous inspire d'utiliser en captant l'attention. Stanley Greene & Friends Launch Noor Photoagency

Stanley Greene is one of the craziest people I know. He's usually all in black leather in the dead of summer, toting a kilo of jewelry, sporting strange hats or a newly razed and shiny head and is often just off the plane after a month photographing a war zone. (Photo © Marion Mozzi)

Greene, who won the prestigious Eugene Smith Award, has long worked for the Paris photoagency VU, but has now launched his own – NOOR – with eight other high-octane award-winning photographers: Samantha Appleton (United States), Jodi Bieber (South Africa), Philip Blenkinsop (Australia), Pep Bonet (Spain), Jan Grarup (Denmark), Yuri Kozyrev (Russia), Kadir van Lohuizen (The Netherlands) and Francesco Zizola (Italy). The group has a gritty black and and white outlook on the world. These will not be pretty pictures, but they will be in your face. "Yeah," says Stanley. "There's still a lot of death out there."

I met Stanley years ago when he needed someone to scribble some text about a chemical pollution story for The New York Times Magazine. That city, Dzerzhinsk, "wasn't even on official maps, planes weren't allowed to fly over it and people lived off of gnarled carrots and roots from their fields opposite the 'White Lake' – a toxic pond the size of the 4th arrondisdement," says Stanley. Originally from Harlem, he's more at home getting shot at in the mountains outside of Grozny (where bullets have actually grazed his ass). Over the years my American friend would bop in and out of Paris in between trips to Kabul, Baghdad, New Orleans, Chechnya (his best known work), Haiti or the latest global disaster and we always got together for a writing session (applications, captions, rereading the manuscript for his book, Open Wound – now published by Trolley Press, left) or a drink and a chat. Or when he asked Lalande to adjust the color on the Chechen solider (below, right) and produce a large print (75 x 56 cm) for an exhibition here in Paris. Tech wizard Robert Ruscoe worked for several hours with Stanley to get the skin tones just right.

Noor's official launch is Thursday evening, 6 September at Visa Pour L’Image photojournalism festival in Perpignan this and next week, during a screening of work of the member photographers.

Apsara: Librairie Cool

Stephane Guyader dirige sa Librarie Apsara sur la chic rue Daguerre dans le 14e avec du jazz sur la lecteur et du thé vert (ou darjeeling) dans la tasse. "C'est une librairie de quartier, conviviale et musicale," dit-il. "Où l'on peut prendre le temps de flâner, de s'informer, d'échanger, de s'asseoir autour d'une table pour feuilleter et découvrir un ouvrage en goûtant un thé chinois ou japonais sur fond de jazz , de oud yéménite ou de flûte."

Stephane achète et vend des livres d'occasion y compris des ouvrages très rares, ou épuisés. Il propose sur son site des possibilities pour lecteurs et vendeurs.

C'est bien de s’immerger dans les mots chez Apsara, de passer un peu de temps avec Proust, Prevert, Virginia Woolf, Hermann Hesse ou Tanizaki et des livres d'art sur Mirò, Matisse et la Modernité, ou bien même Michel Houellebecq. Quelle vacances: Parfait pour la rentrée! En bas, dans “la caverne des poches,” il y a des milliers de bijoux.

Lalande a imprimé quelques pacquets de cartes de visites pour Apsara (design par Fred Griot) "parce que maintenant," dit Stephane, "on va faire des lectures et voilà notre site démarre...la rentrée commence, une nouvelle saison de lectures et lecteurs." La fureur des mots! A suivre...

On Glass: Kareen Kjelstrom

Watch out: Kareen Kjelstrom is a girl with a blow torch. She uses it to melt and shape glass and sterling silver into jewelry designs that also build bridges between cultures. Born in Hawaii and raised in California, Kjelstrom grew up on the Pacific Ocean. (Her mother is Tahitian). Kareen's 2007 Titaua (Tee-tao-ah) collection features fine Italian glass beads and sterling silver that echo the artist’s Polynesian heritage and bring it into a sophisticated and breezy European sensibility.

The French have noticed: Since the spring, her necklaces have gone on the air, sported by Marie Drucker of France 3’s "Soir 3." The French television personality is a big fan; Kareen's designs have also been showcased in the U.S. on Home & Garden Television.
Established in 2000, “KbyKareen handKrafted” jewelry works are one-off creations and limited series pieces. Working with glass beads from Effetre (Italy) and hand-formed sterling silver settings, this self-taught jewelry designer makes her magic happen under the steady blue glow of an oxygen/propane mix torch.

"I moved back to Paris at the end of 2004 and have since been trying to get everything I need to make jewelry here," she says. "Do you know how hard it is to find propane in Paris?" Lalande has been working with Kareen for nearly two years, producing the artist's signature square promotional cards and a "look book."

Kareen splits her year between studios in Paris and Los Angeles, and travels extensively in search of cultural nuances. "I'm something of an archeologist looking for the meanings – as well as the fashions – of contemporary jewelry round the world. My work is really a personal sculpture, a synthesis of a personal history and, of course, femininity."

With representatives in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Amsterdam and Barcelona, exclusive boutiques in the Marais, as well as the VIA Gallery in the Viaduc des Arts, Kareen is fashioning her brave new world out of brilliant glass and silver. Check out Kareen's newest pieces here.
